IELTS preparation for Ethiopia
Everything you need to understand the test and reach your band score, plus a guided 8-week course with AI feedback on Writing and Speaking. For Academic and General Training.
What is IELTS
IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, is the English test most widely accepted for university admission, professional registration, and migration. It is scored on a band scale from 0 to 9 in half-band steps, and a result stays valid for 2 years.
There are two versions. IELTS Academic is taken by people heading into study, and IELTS General Training by people moving for work or migration. The two share the same Listening and Speaking tests and differ only in Reading and Writing Task 1. Pick the one your university or visa asks for, then prepare for that version specifically.
The four sections
Listening
30 minFour recordings of increasing difficulty, from an everyday conversation to an academic lecture, with 40 questions across form completion, multiple choice, matching, and map or diagram labelling. Accents include British, Australian, New Zealand and North American.
Same for Academic and General Training
Reading
60 minThree texts with 40 questions in 60 minutes. Academic uses three long passages from books, journals and newspapers. General Training moves from short everyday notices to workplace texts to one longer general-interest passage.
Differs between Academic and General Training
Writing
60 minTwo tasks in 60 minutes, marked on Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Task 2 is an essay worth double Task 1. In Academic, Task 1 describes a chart, graph, process or map; in General Training, Task 1 is a letter.
Differs between Academic and General Training
Speaking
14 minAn 11 to 14 minute interview in three parts: familiar questions, a two-minute long turn from a cue card, and an abstract discussion. Marked on Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation.
Same for Academic and General Training
Academic or General Training: which one do I need?
IELTS Academic
Applying to university, postgraduate study, or professional registration in an English-speaking country.
- Reading
- Three long passages from books, journals, magazines and newspapers.
- Writing Task 1
- Describe a graph, chart, table, process diagram or map in at least 150 words.
IELTS General Training
Migration to Australia, Canada, the UK or New Zealand, or for work and training programmes.
- Reading
- Three sections that build from short everyday notices and adverts, to workplace texts, to one longer general-interest passage.
- Writing Task 1
- Write a letter (formal, semi-formal or informal) of at least 150 words.
Still unsure? If you are applying to a university or a professional body, you almost certainly need Academic. If you are moving abroad for work or migration, you usually need General Training. When in doubt, confirm with the institution asking for your score.

IELTS frequently asked questions
What is IELTS and who needs it?
IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, measures English for study, work and migration. Universities, employers and immigration authorities in the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and many other countries accept it. You take either Academic or General Training depending on your goal.
What is the difference between IELTS Academic and General Training?
IELTS Academic is for applying to university, postgraduate study, or professional registration in an english-speaking country. IELTS General Training is for migration to australia, canada, the uk or new zealand, or for work and training programmes. Listening and Speaking are the same in both. Reading and Writing Task 1 are where they differ: Academic Reading uses long academic passages and Task 1 describes data, while General Training Reading uses everyday and workplace texts and Task 1 is a letter.

The Atenu courses are built around this computer-delivered format, so you practise on a screen that works the way the real test does.
What band score do I need?
It depends on where you are applying. Many universities ask for an overall 6.0 or 6.5, with no section below a set minimum. Migration programmes often target 6.0 to 7.0.
