IELTS in Ethiopia
Taking IELTS in Ethiopia
How the test is delivered, where to sit it in Addis Ababa, how to register, and how to prepare. Updated for the computer-delivered IELTS.
The computer-delivered IELTS
Since 21 June 2026, all IELTS tests in Ethiopia are delivered on computer. The format, questions and scoring are identical to paper; computer delivery just adds more test dates and faster results.
You read, listen and type on a computer at the test centre. It is not an at-home test. Because the questions and scoring match the old paper test exactly, your preparation still centres on the same four skills, with the added habit of working comfortably on screen.
Where to take IELTS in Ethiopia
IELTS in Ethiopia is run in Addis Ababa by the British Council and by IDP. The British Council test centre is on Comoros Street, with a second location at Addis Ababa University.
Book through an official centre so your result is recognised. The main booking site for Ethiopia is British Council Ethiopia, where you can see current dates, fees and locations.
How to register and sit the test
- 1 Choose your track
Decide whether you need Academic or General Training, based on what your university, employer or visa asks for.
- 2 Book your test
Register and pay through British Council Ethiopia or another official test centre in Addis Ababa. Pick a date that leaves you enough time to prepare.
- 3 Prepare
Work through an Atenu course for your track, practising on a screen that mirrors the computer-delivered test, with AI feedback on Writing and Speaking.
- 4 Sit the test and get results
Computer-delivered results arrive in 3 to 5 days. You can then send your Test Report Form to the institutions that need it.
On test day
- The same valid passport you used to register, not expired
- Confirmation of your booking and test time
- Arrive early; phones and personal items go in storage, not the test room
Your test centre confirms the exact identification and arrival rules when you book. Follow their instructions, since requirements can change.
Fees
Test fees are set by the test centre and change over time, so always confirm the current fee when you book. Atenu does not sell the IELTS test itself.
See current fees and dates at British Council EthiopiaPrepare before you book
The test fee is significant, so go in ready. Atenu runs one guided course per track, built for candidates in Ethiopia and for the computer-delivered format, with AI feedback on every Writing task and Speaking recording.
